With this in mind I started doing a lot of research.
MY LITTLE BLACKSMITH SHOP HEATER SHIELD MOVIE
I didn’t want it to seem like a toy or movie prop I wanted it to look and feel as if someone had taken a time machine back to the late 12th century and brought this shield back with them – more of a museum piece than a simple decoration. One thing that was important to me in creating this shield was maintaining a meticulous attention to historical detail. They were a military order that fought as well as healing, but I felt that by making a shield I was emphasizing the protective aspect of their mission, as opposed to the religious aggression another weapon might have implied. They were “deployed” to the Middle East just like my brother was going to be, and they set up field medical aid centers for the other knights and soldiers. The gift was full of serendipitous parallels: Hospitallers were the military field doctors of their time. He’s a christian, and, while I can’t relate to his beliefs, I can certainly respect them, so I decided to make him a Knight Hospitaller shield. Once he went active duty, his dream posting was to serve as a field trauma surgeon in Afghanistan (think Hawkeye from MASH).Ī lot of things in his life were converging at once: medical school, imminent military service, and his wedding, and I thought of a neat idea for a wedding gift that would sort of sum it all up. They were paying for school and in return he was going to serve as a naval doctor for a few years.

One of my younger brothers is currently paying his own way through medical school (yikes), but once upon a time, he was in the navy reserve. Preface: This post ran a little long, so I’m dividing it into two parts.
